Clippings 7.1 beta 1 released!

This is the first beta release of the next version of Clippings, the extension for Firefox from AE Creations that saves frequently-entered text for later pasting into web page forms. It's being made available for testers and early adopters craving the latest and greatest, and are willing to tolerate a few inevitable bugs.

Read on to learn more about what's new in Clippings 7.1, and how to get it!

What's New

  • New option to paste an HTML-formatted clipping into a rich text editor as plain text
  • Brought back the option to show the Paste As dialog when pasting an HTML-formatted clipping, a feature that existed prior to Clippings 6.0
  • The height of the preview pane in Clippings Sidebar can now be adjusted
  • Improvements to undo in Clippings Manager. Also, you can now reverse the last undo ("undo undo") by pressing Ctrl+Y on Windows, ⇧⌘Z on macOS, and Ctrl+Shift+Z on Linux. The F2 keyboard shortcut is still supported
  • Eliminated the confirmation dialog that appeared when reloading the Synced Clippings folder in Clippings Manager or Clippings Sidebar
  • Clippings will now display an error message if the Sync Clippings data size exceeds the limit of 1 megabyte

Things You Should Know About

  • The version number of this beta release will appear as 7.0.99.1 in Add-ons Manager.
  • Some features may not be available when Firefox is in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive.
  • While Clippings works on the vast majority of web sites, some are now preventing pasting into text boxes. If pasting doesn't work, copy the clipping from Clippings Manager or Clippings Sidebar by right-clicking on it and selecting Copy Clipping Text. You can then paste the clipping into the web page by selecting Paste from the browser context menu.

 Things You Should Know About

  • Sync Clippings Helper 2.0 is backwards compatible with older versions of Clippings. Or rather, it should be -- testers are welcome to verify this!
  • The macOS installer package is not available for this beta release; it will be available at a later date. Until then, see the next section, "How to Get It," for instructions on installing this beta release on macOS
  • If you're installing Sync Clippings Helper using the setup shell script, make sure that Python 3 and the Tkinter package (python3-tk) is installed on your system. The setup script will check for those dependencies and will inform you if they aren't found.

How to Get It

Sync Clippings Helper is available as a Windows setup program (requires Windows 7 or newer) and a shell script for Linux and macOS that can be run from the command line. Get them from the Sync Clippings Helper 2.0 beta 1 page on GitHub.

To install on macOS, run the Linux setup shell script, which works on both Intel and Apple Silicon systems.

If you're already running Sync Clippings Helper on Windows, you can install this beta release over your current version. On macOS and Linux, the setup script will automatically detect and prompt you to upgrade a previous version of Sync Clippings Helper.
