Clippings 6.1 beta 5 released!

Another beta release of Clippings 6.1 is now available, which fixes a few more bugs and adds some minor improvements. It is being made available for testing, and although it is in the most stable beta-quality state yet, expect to encounter a few minor bugs.

This is expected to be the last beta release as work progresses closer to the official, and much-anticipated, 6.1 release.

What's New

The following is a list of what's new and fixed since 6.1 beta 4.  Please see the Clippings 6.1 beta 2 blog post for a full list of all the new features coming in version 6.1.  For a list of bug fixes and new features since, refer to the past blog posts for 6.1 beta 3 and beta 4.
  • You can now undo the drag and drop reordering of clippings and folders in the Clippings Manager tree list (issue #211)
  • The Synced Clippings folder now appears as the first item by default, to make it easier to locate (issue #240). You can move it by dragging and dropping in the Clippings Manager tree to reposition it, but it cannot be moved to a subfolder.  NOTE: This feature is only available to users upgrading to 6.1b5 from 6.0.x, or to new users installing Clippings 6.1; current beta users upgrading to beta 5 will continue to see the Synced Clippings folders appearing elsewhere in the list.
  • Experimental feature: Drag and drop text into the tree list in Clippings Manager to create a new clipping
  • Bug fix: Synced Clippings folder deleted after restoring from backup (issue #232)
  • Bug fix: Unwanted expanding of a folder in the Clippings Manager tree when moving a clipping or folder using drag and drop
  • Other minor fixes

Things You Should Know About
  • Clippings 6.1 requires Firefox 60 or newer.
  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.

Known Issues
  • The ordering of clippings and folders in the Synced Clippings folder won't be preserved if syncing between Firefox and Thunderbird. This issue doesn't occur if syncing only between multiple instances of Firefox.

How to Get It

IMPORTANT! If you are already using Clippings and want to try the beta release, back up your clippings first before upgrading.

To install this beta release, head over to the Clippings 6.1 beta 5 page on GitHub. Look for the link to clippings-6.1b5.xpi, then click on it to install.

If you want to use Sync Clippings, you'll need to download and install the Sync Clippings helper app. More information and download links can be found on the Sync Clippings page on the AE Creations website. The Sync Clippings Helper app is currently available for Windows only.  The current release of the Sync Clippings Helper is 1.0 beta 3; an official 1.0 release of the helper app will be announced on this blog as it becomes available, and all beta users will have to upgrade to it.

Following the release of Clippings 6.1 beta 3 earlier this week, another beta is now available, which fixes a leftover bug that was unresolved in beta 3.

As is the case with the previous beta releases, it is being made available for testing, and although it is in a fairly stable beta-quality state, expect to encounter the inevitable bugs.

What's New

See the blog post for Clippings 6.1 beta 2 for a full list of all the new features and improvements in version 6.1. Below is a list of changes since the beta 3 release:
  • Bug fix: Duplicated menu items appearing on Clippings menu on startup (issue #236)

  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.

Known Issues
  • If Sync Clippings is turned on and a backup is restored in Clippings Manager, the Sync Clippings folder is deleted (issue #232). Workaround: open the Clippings preferences page, then turn off Sync Clippings and turn it back on.

How to Get It

If you are a current beta tester with a previous 6.1 beta release installed, you must uninstall it first, then quit and restart Firefox, then install 6.1 beta 4. Clippings 6.1 beta 3 released!

Work on the next version of Clippings for Firefox Quantum is continuing along, and with that comes more improvements and bug fixes in this third beta release of Clippings 6.1. It is being made available for testing, and although it is in a fairly stable beta-quality state, expect to encounter the inevitable bugs.

What's New

  • When turning off Sync Clippings, an option has been added to remove the Synced Clippings folder from the Clippings menu and Clippings Manager. (NOTE: The sync file will not be deleted.)
  • More options for the frequency of the clippings backup reminder: choose to be reminded to back up your clippings every day, or every 2, 3, 5, 7, 14 or 30 days. The default setting is 7 days.
  • Bug fix: Synced clippings and folders sometimes appearing randomly outside the Synced Clippings folder on the Clippings menu (issue #236)
  • Bug fix: When turning off Sync Clippings, the confirmation dialog is unresponsive if Clippings Manager is open at the same time (issue #236)
  • Added an "About Clippings" dialog, accessible from the Clippings preferences page

Information on how to upgrade the Sync Clippings helper can be found in the "How to Get It" section below.

  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.

What to do if Clippings is disabled after upgrading to Thunderbird 60

Users who are upgrading to Thunderbird 60 (latest release 60.3.0 at the time of writing) will notice that Clippings is disabled after the upgrade, and updating Clippings from Add-ons Manager doesn't work.  If this happens to you, don't panic!

Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6 is the latest version that is compatible with Thunderbird 60, and it is now available.  Because of changes to add-ons in Thunderbird 60, Clippings for Thunderbird will not automatically update, and you will need to download it from the AE Creations website.  Follow the step-by-step instructions given on the installation page for Clippings to upgrade.

Your existing clippings data will be preserved even after uninstalling the old version of Clippings, and it will be automatically migrated when installing the new version.

Learn more about what's new in Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6,  as well as important things you should know about it, in the release announcement blog post. If you have more questions, post them to the AE Creations Help and Support Forums on Google Groups.

Clippings 6.0.7 released!

A minor update to Clippings 6 is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

If you already have Clippings installed, it will be upgraded for you if automatic extension updates are enabled. Otherwise, open Add-ons Manager (Tools → Add-ons), then right-click on the entry for Clippings in the list of installed extensions and choose Find Updates.

What's New
  • Bug fix: Placeholder prompt sometimes fails to paste clipping (issue #233)
  • Bug fix: In Clippings Manager, copied folder doesn't appear after copy (issue #231)
  • Other minor fixes

Things You Should Know About

Clippings 6 is a WebExtension for Firefox 57 and newer. It is not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird. Please see the instructions on the AE Creations website on how to get Clippings for Thunderbird.

There are several differences compared to previous versions of Clippings (version 5.5 and older):
  • Due to WebExtensions being restricted from using any keyboard shortcuts that start with CTRL + ALT, the keyboard paste key has now changed - it is now ALT+SHIFT+Y (Cmd+Shift+Y on macOS).
  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.
  • Clippings Manager can import the legacy Clippings RDF/XML datasource file format (*.rdf files) as well as the new Clippings 6 format; however, it can only export to Clippings 6 format. To exchange clippings from Clippings 6 with other users, they need to have Clippings 5.5 or newer installed.
