This is another update to Clippings 6.1 that fixes a major issue with backup reminder notifications, and comes with other improvements. It is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

  • Improvements to German translation (thanks to Crowdin translator AlexanderS)
  • Bug fix: First-time backup notification not appearing (issue #251). Users upgrading from version 6.1.1 will see the first-time backup notification appearing a few minutes after the upgrade to 6.1.2, as it has been more than a week (7 days) after version 6.1 was released

Additional add-on permissions requested when upgrading Clippings from version 6.0.x

Users who are upgrading Clippings from version 6.0.x may notice a popup appearing in Firefox, asking you to confirm additional permissions being requested by the new version of Clippings. It may look something like this:

Clippings upgrade permissions popup
The add-on permissions popup that appears when upgrading Clippings.

Clippings 6.1 contains many new features that require asking for additional permissions at the time of the upgrade.  The new permissions are:
  • Exchange messages with programs other than Firefox: This permission is needed for the new Sync Clippings feature, which would need to be turned on from Clippings preferences if you want to use it. If you won't be turning on Sync Clippings, then this permission is not applicable.
  • Display notifications to you: This is needed for the new backup reminder feature.
You can learn more about the permissions that Clippings is requesting when it is being added to Firefox, and the reasons why they are needed, in this page on the AE Creations website.

This update to Clippings 6.1, which was released just yesterday, contains a few bug fixes as well as a fix for cosmetic issues on Firefox 64. It is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

  • Bug fix: Issues with backup reminder settings in extension preferences and first-time backup dialog (issue #247)
  • Bug fix: After turning off Sync Clippings, the old Synced Clippings folder incorrectly retains its special icon (issue #244).  NOTE: This bug fix will be visible on Firefox 64 and newer.

  • Experimental feature: Drag and drop text into the tree list in Clippings Manager to create a new clipping
  • Bug fix: Synced Clippings folder deleted after restoring from backup (issue #232)
  • Bug fix: Unwanted expanding of a folder in the Clippings Manager tree when moving a clipping or folder using drag and drop

See the blog post for Clippings 6.1 beta 2 for a full list of all the new features and improvements in version 6.1. Below is a list of changes since the beta 3 release:

  • The ordering of clippings and folders in the Synced Clippings folder won't be preserved if syncing between Firefox and Thunderbird. This issue shouldn't occur if syncing only between multiple instances of Firefox.

How to Get It

UPDATE - 13 November 2018: Additional notes added re: upgrading Sync Clippings Helper.

What to do if Clippings is disabled after upgrading to Thunderbird 60

Users who are upgrading to Thunderbird 60 (latest release 60.3.0 at the time of writing) will notice that Clippings is disabled after the upgrade, and updating Clippings from Add-ons Manager doesn't work.  If this happens to you, don't panic!

Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6 is the latest version that is compatible with Thunderbird 60, and it is now available.  Because of changes to add-ons in Thunderbird 60, Clippings for Thunderbird will not automatically update, and you will need to download it from the AE Creations website.  Follow the step-by-step instructions given on the installation page for Clippings to upgrade.

Your existing clippings data will be preserved even after uninstalling the old version of Clippings, and it will be automatically migrated when installing the new version.

Learn more about what's new in Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6,  as well as important things you should know about it, in the release announcement blog post. If you have more questions, post them to the AE Creations Help and Support Forums on Google Groups.

Clippings 6.0.7 released!

A minor update to Clippings 6 is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

If you already have Clippings installed, it will be upgraded for you if automatic extension updates are enabled. Otherwise, open Add-ons Manager (Tools → Add-ons), then right-click on the entry for Clippings in the list of installed extensions and choose Find Updates.

What's New
  • Bug fix: Placeholder prompt sometimes fails to paste clipping (issue #233)
  • Bug fix: In Clippings Manager, copied folder doesn't appear after copy (issue #231)
  • Other minor fixes

Things You Should Know About

Clippings 6 is a WebExtension for Firefox 57 and newer. It is not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird. Please see the instructions on the AE Creations website on how to get Clippings for Thunderbird.

There are several differences compared to previous versions of Clippings (version 5.5 and older):
  • Due to WebExtensions being restricted from using any keyboard shortcuts that start with CTRL + ALT, the keyboard paste key has now changed - it is now ALT+SHIFT+Y (Cmd+Shift+Y on macOS).
  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.
  • Clippings Manager can import the legacy Clippings RDF/XML datasource file format (*.rdf files) as well as the new Clippings 6 format; however, it can only export to Clippings 6 format. To exchange clippings from Clippings 6 with other users, they need to have Clippings 5.5 or newer installed.

Clippings compatibility with Thunderbird 60

Thunderbird 60 was released on 6 August 2018. The Mozilla Thunderbird Blog has more information on what's new in this release of the email client from Mozilla.

There have been many changes in Thunderbird 60 that makes Clippings 5.5.x, the latest stable release of Clippings for Thunderbird, incompatible with it. As a result, Clippings 5.5.x is not compatible with Thunderbird 60.

Clippings 6 is a WebExtension rewrite for Firefox Quantum. As such, it is not compatible with any version of Thunderbird.

Work is in progress on Clippings for Thunderbird version 5.6, which will be compatible with Thunderbird 60, but an official release date has not yet been determined.

Until then, Thunderbird users should stay with Thunderbird 52.x so that they can continue to use Clippings. Users who crave the latest and greatest Thunderbird release may want to consider trying out the latest beta release of Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6.

Clippings and Panic Button with Firefox ESR 60

Many users on Firefox ESR 52.x have upgraded to the latest ESR release, version 60. This blog post summarizes compatibility info with Clippings and Panic Button for those users who have not yet made the leap.

Clippings

Clippings 6 is compatible with Firefox ESR 60.x.  Users of Firefox ESR 52.x should make a backup of their clippings before the upgrade; you should be seeing reminders to do this in the Clippings context menu and in Clippings Manager if you have version 5.5.x installed.  Once you have upgraded to Firefox ESR 60, upgrade Clippings to the latest release (version 6.0.6 at the time of this writing), where you will be prompted to upload your backup file.

There are a few differences between Clippings 6 and the legacy versions of Clippings. The biggest change is that the shortcut key prefix for pasting a clipping with the keyboard is now ALT+SHIFT+Y (Command+Shift+Y on macOS). There are plans to allow users to change the shortcut key prefix in an upcoming release.

Many users have been syncing their clippings between Firefox and Thunderbird by setting the data source location to a folder on their system that is accessible to both applications. Automatic syncing of clippings is not yet possible in Clippings 6. For now, you will need to sync your data manually, using the import and export actions in Clippings Manager.

After installing Clippings 6, it is a good idea to back up your clippings on a regular basis to keep your clippings data safe from unexpected data corruption. Unlike past releases of Clippings, the WebExtension version is unable to save backups automatically.

Note that Clippings does not work when Private Browsing is turned on in Firefox.

Panic Button

Panic Button 4 is compatible with Firefox ESR 60.x. Once you have upgraded, install the latest version of Panic Button (version 4.0.3 at the time of this writing).

The Panic Button action of hiding all browser windows and showing a floating toolbar with a button for restoring your browsing session is no longer available. But you can still hide your browser window and replace it with another window showing a web site of your choice. Also, it is no longer possible to be prompted for a password when restoring your browser sesssion.  The "Hide and Replace" action doesn't work when Private Browsing is turned on in Firefox.

Send Tab URLs discontinued

Now that Firefox ESR version 60 has been released, and Firefox ESR 52.x will reach end-of-life status very soon, Send Tab URLs is officially discontinued.

Send Tab URLs relies on a lot of functionality that is not possible with WebExtensions. For example, it is no longer possible to get the default email client that is set in Windows. With that, it was decided that rewriting Send Tab URLs into a WebExtension is not feasible.

For users looking for an alternative, consider FoxyTab by erosman. Among many things you can do with this add-on, you can copy a list of URLs for all your browser tabs, or just the ones to the left or the right of the current tab. You can also choose to copy just the URLs of the browser tabs only, or both the page titles and URLs. You can then paste the list into the editor window of your email program, and format it as desired.

The Send Tab URLs page on the AE Creations website will be taken down soon, but the Send Tab URLs discussion category in the Help and Support forums will continue to be available.

Clippings 6.0.6 released!

This maintenance release ensures that the Clippings context menu that appears when right-clicking on a web page textbox will continue to work in Firefox 61 and future releases. It is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

If you already have Clippings installed, it will be upgraded for you if automatic extension updates are enabled. Otherwise, open Add-ons Manager (Tools → Add-ons), then right-click on the entry for Clippings in the list of installed extensions and choose Find Updates.

What's New
  • Compatible with Firefox 61
  • Bug fix: In Clippings Manager, newly-created clipping doesn't show the correct label icon in the tree list if it was created from the New Clipping dialog (issue #208)

Things You Should Know About

Clippings 6 is a WebExtension for Firefox 57 and newer. It is not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird.  Thunderbird users should install Clippings 5.5.2, available from the Past Versions page on the AE Creations website.

There are several differences compared to previous versions of Clippings:

Clippings compatibility with latest Thunderbird releases

Although Firefox add-ons are now forced to switch to the newer but immature and vastly inferior WebExtensions technology to maintain compatibility with current and future versions of Firefox, legacy add-ons continue to be supported for Thunderbird.

Clippings 5.5.x remains available for Thunderbird 52.x; however, there have been issues with Clippings reported against the latest beta versions of Thunderbird -- the most recent version being 59.0 at the time of this writing.

Users should stay with the current stable release of Thunderbird in order to continue using Clippings 5.5.x. A new version of Clippings for Thunderbird is in the works, but a release schedule for this new version has not been determined.

Clippings 6.0.3 released!

This minor release of Clippings 6 brings back a few more features from Clippings 5.5 and older, and includes many improvements.

What's New
  • Brought back the shortcut key list in Clippings Manager and the keyboard paste dialog. To print it, click Export To HTML, select a folder location of your choice, then open the exported file in Firefox and print from there
  • The Placeholder Toolbar in Clippings Manager has also returned
  • Added support for German
  • Fixed a potential security vulnerability affecting Clippings Manager and the placeholder prompt dialog
  • Other minor fixes

Things You Should Know About

Clippings 6 is a WebExtension for Firefox 57 and newer. It is not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird.  Thunderbird users should install Clippings 5.5.2, available from the Past Versions page on the AE Creations website.

There are several differences compared to previous versions of Clippings:

Translators wanted for localizing Clippings

This is a call for translators to help with localizing Clippings.  Are you a Clippings user and want it in your native language?  If you are fluent in English and another world language, and would like to help with translation, consider contributing to the effort on the Crowdin project for Clippings!

Just go to the Crowdin project, sign up as a translator, and then start translating.  Localization templates for several languages have already been added, but if a desired language is missing, simply post to the discussion forum on Crowdin and ask for your language to be added.

The goal is to have translations for the most popular languages ready for the upcoming release of Clippings, which brings back some features from legacy versions of Clippings (shortcut list, placeholder toolbar in Clippings Manager), as well as more bug fixes.

What's New
  •  Placeholder prompts are back!  Custom and auto-incrementing placeholders are supported. If you paste a clipping containing placeholders, you will be prompted to fill in their values (or select from a list if there are multiple default values). Auto-incrementing placeholders can be reset by right-clicking on the Clippings button on the browser toolbar
  • Clipping labels have also returned.  They can be set when creating a clipping from the New Clipping dialog, and changed in Clippings Manager
  • Added ability to backup and restore your clippings from Clippings Manager (click on the Tools menu)
  • Resizable tree list in Clippings Manager
  • You can now undo edits to clipping/folder name and clipping content in Clippings Manager
  • Added ability to maximize the Clippings Manager window by selecting Tools → Maximize or pressing CTRL+F10 (macOS users: this feature is already available by selecting the Window → Zoom command from the menu bar at the top of the screen. This feature may not work on Linux.)
  • Bug fix: On Linux, the Clippings Manager window is always on top. This issue is fixed by automatically minimizing Clippings Manager when switching to another window
