What to do if Clippings is disabled after upgrading to Thunderbird 60

Users who are upgrading to Thunderbird 60 (latest release 60.3.0 at the time of writing) will notice that Clippings is disabled after the upgrade, and updating Clippings from Add-ons Manager doesn't work.  If this happens to you, don't panic!

Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6 is the latest version that is compatible with Thunderbird 60, and it is now available.  Because of changes to add-ons in Thunderbird 60, Clippings for Thunderbird will not automatically update, and you will need to download it from the AE Creations website.  Follow the step-by-step instructions given on the installation page for Clippings to upgrade.

Your existing clippings data will be preserved even after uninstalling the old version of Clippings, and it will be automatically migrated when installing the new version.

Learn more about what's new in Clippings for Thunderbird 5.6,  as well as important things you should know about it, in the release announcement blog post. If you have more questions, post them to the AE Creations Help and Support Forums on Google Groups.

Hi! Thanks for your awesome Add-on for Thunderbird. I am running Thunderbird 60.3.1 (32-bit) and Clippings 5.6. I recently switched to a new Windows 10 laptop and exported my Clippings from the old laptop (which was running Windows 8.1, Thunderbird 60.3.1 (32-bit) and Clippings 5.6).

When I try to import the .json file (and I've also tried .rdf), I am able to view my imported Clippings in Clippings Manager instantly, but when I try to close Clippings Manager I receive the following error message:

A problem occured while saving Clippings data. Click OK to try again, or Cancel to exit without saving. When I click ok, the dialog box continues to pop up on an infinite loop. When I click cancel, the imported Clippings disappear.

I have confirmed that my Thunderbird profile has read/write permission on the new system. Are there any other troubleshooting steps you can recommend?

Thank you in advance

Do you get the same error message when closing Thunderbird, starting it again and then reimporting your clippings?

I can't think of a potential cause of this error, but I'm interested in seeing what, if any, errors are logged in the console. From the main Thunderbird window, click the application menu and select Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error Console. Then open Clippings Manager, import the file again and then try closing Clippings Manager. If the error pops up again, switch to the Error Console and observe any errors that appear.
