Clippings 6.4 beta 1 released!

This is the first beta release of the next version of Clippings. It is being made available for testers and early adopters craving the latest and greatest, and who are willing to tolerate a few bugs.

What's New

• Improvements to keyboard navigation in windows and dialogs (issue #369)
• Fixed a Clippings Manager bug where undoing actions on a synced clipping or folder stopped working after reloading the Synced Clippings folder (issue #384)

Things You Should Know About

• Thunderbird Users: This version of Clippings is designed for Firefox and is not compatible with Thunderbird. A beta release of a new version of Clippings for Thunderbird is coming soon, and will be announced on this blog when it's released.
  
• Clippings 6.4 requires Firefox 91 or newer.
• Some features may not be available when Firefox is in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive.
• If you want to use Sync Clippings, download and install the Sync Clippings helper app. More information and download links can be found on the Sync Clippings page on the AE Creations website. The Sync Clippings Helper app is available for Windows only; a version for macOS and Linux is currently in beta.

How to Get It

IMPORTANT! If you're already using Clippings and want to try the beta release, back up your clippings first before upgrading.

To install this beta release:

1. Head over to the Clippings 6.4 beta 1 page on GitHub.
2. Look for the link to clippings-6.4b1.xpi, and then right-click on it and choose Save Link As. Save the XPI file to a location on your system.
3. Open Add-ons Manager, then click on the gear icon on the top-right corner of the page and select Install Add-on From File. Locate and select the XPI file.
4. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Clippings for Thunderbird 6.1.6 released!

Another minor update to Clippings for Thunderbird 6.1 has been released, and is now available from Add-ons for Thunderbird and the AE Creations website. Clippings for Thunderbird 6.1 requires Thunderbird versions 78 or 91.

If you already have an older version of Clippings for Thunderbird installed, it will be upgraded for you if automatic extension updates are enabled. Otherwise, open Add-ons Manager (from the Thunderbird menu, click Add-ons), click on the entry for Clippings for Thunderbird in the list of installed extensions, and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Check for Updates.

Still Using Firefox 78 ESR?

Upcoming versions of Clippings won't be compatible with Firefox 78 ESR. If you're still using Clippings on this older Extended Support Release, upgrade to Firefox 91 ESR as soon as possible so that you'll continue getting future updates for Clippings.

Still Using Firefox 78 ESR?

Upcoming versions of Clippings won't be compatible with Firefox 78 ESR. If you're still using Clippings on this older Extended Support Release, upgrade to Firefox 91 ESR as soon as possible so that you'll continue getting future updates for Clippings.

Using Clippings With Zendesk and Other Web Apps That Use CKEditor

Zendesk has reportedly changed their HTML editor recently, and this change is causing issues for Zendesk users on Firefox who have been using the Clippings add-on to paste frequently-entered text into their customer support messages.

Symptoms that have been reported are:

• When pasting a clipping containing line breaks, the line breaks are lost and a "@" symbol is inserted in their place.
• A clipping that contains HTML tags is not pasted at all.

This issue is caused by CKEditor, which is the HTML editor that has recently been adopted by Zendesk. Users on other web sites and web apps using CKEditor will experience these problems as well.

There are workarounds available, though they are less than ideal. For example, you can copy the clipping from Clippings Manager and then paste it into the HTML editor using CTRL+V (Command+V on macOS) -- but any HTML formatting won't be applied.

Another minor update to Clippings for Thunderbird 6.1 has been released, and is now available from Add-ons for Thunderbird and the AE Creations website.

Sync Clippings Helper 1.2 beta 2 for macOS and Linux released!

This is the second beta release of an upcoming version of the Sync Clippings Helper app, which introduces compatibility with macOS and Linux. This beta release is intended for testers and early adopters craving the latest and greatest. Read on to learn more about how to get it, things you should know about, and how to report a bug.

What's New

• Now compatible with macOS and Linux
• You can now browse for the sync folder location from the Sync Clippings settings dialog in Clippings preferences (requires Clippings for Firefox 6.3.2 or newer, or Clippings for Thunderbird 6.1.2 or newer)
  
•  New in 1.2b2  When choosing the sync folder location from Sync Clippings settings, the folder picker dialog will now default to your home folder, rather than the system root folder
•  New in 1.2b2  Bug fix: Thunderbird is unable to connect to Sync Clippings Helper on macOS (issue #11)

Things You Should Know About

• This beta release is only available for macOS and Linux. Sync Clippings Helper 1.2 will be available for Windows at a later date.
• Apple Silicon users: The installer package has not been tested on Apple M1 systems; it's possible that it (or the Sync Clippings Helper app) may not run at all, or it may require Rosetta 2. Use the shell script instead to install Sync Clippings Helper (see the next section, "How to Get It"). A version of the macOS installer package for Apple Silicon is planned for release.
• If you are installing Sync Clippings Helper using the setup script, make sure that Python 3 and the Tkinter package (python3-tk) is installed on your system. The setup script will check for those dependencies and will inform you if they aren't found.

How to Get It

Sync Clippings Helper is available as a macOS installer package (requires macOS 10.14 or newer) or a shell script that can be run from the command line. Get them from the Sync Clippings Helper 1.2 beta 2 page on GitHub.

Uninstalling the Previous Beta Release

If you installed Sync Clippings Helper 1.2 beta 1, you should uninstall the old version first before installing version 1.2 beta 2.

If you installed it using the macOS installer package, open Terminal and go to the folder location /Library/SyncClippings/1.2.0. Run the script uninstall.sh with sudo, and follow the prompts.

If Sync Clippings Helper was installed using the setup script, delete the following folder paths/files:

• /usr/local/opt/sync-clippings (default installation location)
  
• ~/.mozilla/native-messaging-hosts/syncClippings.json
• ~/.config/sync-clippings

Sync Clippings Helper for macOS and Linux: Beta release now available

Until now, the Sync Clippings Helper application has only been available for Windows. Due to popular demand, that's finally changing -- with a beta release of the next version of Sync Clippings Helper which is compatible with macOS and Linux!

Sync Clippings Helper for Mac

Available as a macOS installer package (requires macOS 10.14 or newer). Get it from the Sync Clippings 1.2 beta 1 page on GitHub; look for the file named SyncClippings-1.2b1-macos-x64.pkg. Simply save it to your system, then double-click on the file to launch the installer and follow the prompts.

If you're comfortable with the command line, you also have the option of running a shell script to install Sync Clippings Helper. You can get it from the Sync Clippings 1.2 beta 1 page on GitHub; look for the file named syncClippings-1.2b1-setup.tar.gz -- download the .tar.gz file, extract it, and then run the extracted shell script to install Sync Clippings Helper. Make sure that Python 3 and the Tkinter package (python3-tk) is installed on your system; get Python 3 from the Python website, or use a package manager such as Homebrew.

Apple Silicon users: The installer package has not been tested on Apple M1 systems; it's possible that it (or the Sync Clippings Helper app) may not run at all, or it may require Rosetta 2.
