Clippings 6.1.5 released!

This is another minor update to Clippings 6.1 that comes with a few improvements and a fix for a long-standing bug. It is now available from Mozilla Add-ons and the AE Creations website.

If you already have Clippings installed, it will be upgraded for you if automatic extension updates are enabled. Otherwise, open Add-ons Manager (Tools → Add-ons), then right-click on the entry for Clippings in the list of installed extensions and choose Find Updates.

What's New
  • Imported clippings and folders now maintain their original sequence (issue #256)
  • Exporting clippings from Clippings Manager now saves the ordering of clippings and folders (issue #261)
  • Commonly-used special characters (question mark, parentheses, quotation marks, asterisk, common currency symbols, etc.) can now be used in default values for placeholders (issue #73). Note that the pipe symbol (|), curly braces ({}) and square brackets([]) cannot be used.
  • Bug fix: Sporadic "no active browser tab" error when pasting clipping with custom placeholders (issue #262)

Things You Should Know About
  • Clippings 6.1 requires Firefox 60 or newer.
  • Clippings won't work in Private Browsing mode, or if the browser privacy settings are too restrictive. Your clippings will not be accessible, and new clippings cannot be created.
  • If you want to use Sync Clippings, you'll need to download and install the Sync Clippings helper app. More information and download links can be found on the Sync Clippings page on the AE Creations website. The Sync Clippings Helper app is currently available for Windows only.

UPDATE 3: Clippings and Panic Button disabled on Firefox

Despite the emergency fix that the Mozilla team rolled out on Saturday to re-enable extensions that had been suddenly disabled on Friday evening, there were reports from some users that the fix was unsuccessful. Firefox ESR users were also left out.

Mozilla has just released an update to Firefox (version 66.0.4) and Firefox ESR (version 60.6.2). All users should update Firefox to regain use of Clippings, Panic Button, and any other installed extensions.  See the announcement from the Mozilla team on their Twitter page, and their posting on the Mozilla Add-ons blog.

If you are having trouble re-enabling your extensions or want to learn more about the Firefox update, you should post your questions and comments to the Mozilla Add-ons Twitter page or the Mozilla Discourse forums.

UPDATE 2: Clippings and Panic Button disabled on Firefox

The Mozilla team is rolling out a fix for Firefox which should re-enable Clippings, Panic Button, and any other installed extensions which had been recently disabled due to a certificate issue in Firefox.  Updates on this issue are being posted to the Mozilla Add-ons Twitter page and in the Mozilla Discourse forums.

If you are still impacted by this issue, please be patient. Some users may be tempted to uninstall Clippings and Panic Button to try to fix the problem.  Please don't do that as you will lose your settings and data for an extension when uninstalling it!

Questions and comments on this Firefox certificate issue should be directed to the Mozilla Add-ons Twitter page, and the Mozilla Discourse forums.

UPDATE: Clippings and Panic Button disabled on Firefox

For the last few hours, users of Clippings and Panic Button have found that these extensions have been suddenly disabled in Firefox. This is apparently due to a certificate issue in Firefox, which has affected all installed extensions.

According to their latest update, the Mozilla team is rolling out a fix for Firefox which "will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours." Read their Twitter post for details.

Questions and comments on this Firefox certificate issue should be directed to the Mozilla Add-ons Twitter page, and the Mozilla Discourse forums.

Clippings and Panic Button not working on Firefox

Users of Clippings and Panic Button may have noticed that these extensions have been suddenly disabled by Firefox, due to them being "unverified." Users may notice that other installed extensions are having the same issue.

This is apparently due to a certificate error in Firefox.  I have been able to find this out only after seeing this banner appear at the top of the page in the Mozilla Discourse user forums (click on the screen shot to enlarge):

Aside from that, there is no announcement from Mozilla, via their official website, their support website or Mozilla Discourse, regarding this breakage, nor are there any updates on a fix.  There are some discussions elsewhere on the web (see this Reddit post, for example) from frustrated Firefox users who are experiencing this problem with their installed add-ons.

I will post any updates as they come.
